Cornish Queen
Syn. Haye Farm No. 8
Fruity Cooker / Eater
1900’s Cornwall
Self-Sterile (needs a pollinator)
Mid Harvester – October
Rediscovered by local Tamar Valley folk James Evans & Mary Martin at Haye Farm in the Fowey valley (hence its alternative name of ‘Haye No.8’).
A fairly attractive apple with an interesting overall shape & pattern not unlike ‘Cornish Tiger’. The base colour is a fairly vibrate green with intense red striping from the crown which fades into broken dot & dashes.
One of its many virtues also include that fact it is pretty much canker resistant which makes it highly desirable to orchards on our western seaboard. Also, interestingly this apple (as with most Cornish varieties) can be grown from ‘Pitchers’.
