Onion Redstreak
Syn. Onion Apple, Tamar Onion
Juicer / Cider
1800’s Tamar Valley, Cornwall
Self-Sterile (needs a pollinator)
Mid Harvester – October
This exceptionally rare apple was almost extinct a few years ago as it has faded from memory in 1933. It wasn’t until the great Pomona pair Evans & Martin saved cutting from a lone tree in the Tamar Valley it was saved once more & now has had a somewhat of a resurgence in fortune as small market gardens in the Valley hide them in sheltered corners to keep the safe.
It has a curious shape, almost conical, with a luminous, glossy rich yellow with intermittent deep red stripes. The trees can live to quite an age & almost prefer the damp, humid condition of the valley.
