Pendragon
Juicer / Cider
19th Century Cornwall
Self-Sterile (needs a pollinator)
Mid Harvester – October
This exceptionally beautiful apple has deep rich crimson skin with a rich strawberry hue interior. Young trees are initially has quite upright growth but will age to a gracefully weeping crown, the blossom is also a rich cerise making also the perfect complement to any orchard or even as a purely ornamental tree if the gardener so wishes.
There has been quite a buzz about this apple since in 2009 the Telegraph Newspaper released its bold article stating that there had been evidence that the Pendragon has been grown in the South West since the 12th Century – this is a falsehood. Pendragon was the name of the house James Evans & Mary Martin found this Apple growing in Stoke Climsland, East Cornwall. BUT... where the actually history is far less jazzy, it is nonetheless intriguing. This particular variety is thought to be a progeny of the ‘original’ apples from Tian Shan, Kazakhstan. A particular apple from this region, the ‘Niedzwetzkyana’ was introduced to the British public 1894. The then renowned plantsman Canon Andrews started to use this variety in his studies & a few pips found its was to this garden & thus the 'Pendragon' was formed. Interesting enough it has been shown in clinical trial this variety beat firm favours such as Cox or Golden Delicious on its nutritional qualities & exemplary health benefits. |
