The French do have plenty of warted squashes in their horticultural arsenal, including the famous ‘Galeuse d’Eysines’ & ‘Warty Skinned Fancy Gourd’ as listed by Vilmorin in 1885 but it is worth reminding ourselves it was the Native Americans who are the true genius behind Warty cucurbits & by far the most striking is the American ‘Warty Goblin’. Expect highly knobbly 4kg (8.5lbs) sized fruits.
CULTURE – Sow seeds 2.5cm deep on their edge in May undercover in individual pots. Once plants establish plant out at 45cm (18”) intervals, some can climb / trail for 2m (6ft) Can be harvested from 15 weeks. Prefers hot, rich, moisture retentive soil.
