Queens
Syn. Queens of Devonshire, Queen of Slew Orchard Apple
1883 Veitches of Exeter, Devon
Self-Sterile (needs a pollinator)
Mid Harvester – September
Straight from the wonderous Veitches Nursery in 1883, this apple become quite popular in Devonshire Orchards but have since fell out of favour making it now quite rare.
A real beauty. Its produces sweet, rich Blood red apples with plenty of flavour on an upright but wheeping crown making picking a pleasure. It never gets to great size making it perfect for most gardens & orchards. (If you want a russet form of this variety then try 'Veitch's Perfection' another great apple which they breed a few year later.)
As with most older varieties it does have thick skin but it does mean it does have some resistance to scab & bird predation. Word of caution, it is worth peeling these if eater straight from the tree as the skin can be a little tough for modern tastes.
It is worth to note that this variety does benefit from a well-ventilated spot else it can be suspectable to a little canker.
NOT THE SAME AS 'QUEEN' APPLE WHICH IS FROM ESSEX IN 1858
Veitch's Queens Apple
Scion Wood Size: 8-10"
Thickness can vary according to variety.
