Sweet Merlin
Cider / Juicer
1900 Roseland Peninsular, Cornwall
Self-Sterile (needs a pollinator)
Early Harvester – September
A rather unusual apple with a deep crimson blush one side & pale yellow the other. The shape is largely conical but the top is flattened off with age. The slightly greasy skin is delightfully paired with creamy sub-acidic to borderline tart flavour & the aroma is somewhat unusual as it smells akin to lemon sherbets. The juice has a lovely rose pink tinge.
It has been noted that the Sweet Merlin from Roseland is remarkably similar to the ‘Ynys Enlli’ apple of Bardsey Island fame. This famous apple is also known as the ‘Merlin’ so it is not hard to see how the two may well be the one and the same. The name is from the fact the cottage sat within a ruined priory which is said to be the last rest place of the Wizard Merlin of the Arthurian Legend fame. A link which Cornwall holds dear.
