Tom Putt
Cider / Juicer
1780’s Gittisham, Devonshire, UK (also grown by his nephew Rev. Tom Putt of Trent, Somerset)
Self-Sterile (needs a pollinator)
Mid Harvester – October
Once an incredibly popular cider apple in Devon, so much so, it was hard to find an orchard which didn’t stock this variety. It’s an incredibly vigorous, thickly spreading, heavy cropper with little in the way of disease. Colloquially known as the ‘phoenix tree’ as an old tree on in its dotage can miraculously regain vigour if given a little heavy prune & a pinch of TLC.
Fairly easy to identify due to it’s angular, conic apple which a largely green but becomes easily sun blushed in the summer months. The texture is a little coarse becomes greasy once stored (which can be up to 3 months in favourable conditions) but as its primary use as a cider apple this qualities can easily be overlooked.
